Arkansas vs Utah: Scouting Report, Prediction and How to Watch

You can skip the rest of this and remember one thing: Arkansas at Utah gets decided in the trenches. Both head coaches said so out loud this week, and the tape backs them up.
How to watch Arkansas vs Utah
The Razorbacks go on the road for the first time this season to face a Utah team that just moved up to No. 20 in the Week 2 AP poll after rolling Idaho 66 to 14. Utah went 11 and 2 a year ago and closed it with a 44 to 22 win over Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl, so this is a real measuring stick, at altitude, at night, in one of the best home environments in the country. It is also the first meeting ever between the two programs, so there is no tape and no history to lean on.
Beat North Alabama 31-14
1st yr HC Ryan Silverfield
Rolled Idaho 66-14
1st yr HC Morgan Scalley
Strip away the setting, though, and this game comes down to one question: can Arkansas's big, physical front win the line of scrimmage against a Utah team that rebuilt both of its lines from scratch this offseason?
The key matchup: the trenches
Utah replaced all five offensive line starters, including two tackles who went in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. It tore down its defensive line too and lost an edge rusher who had 11 and a half sacks a year ago. Arkansas, under first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield, is built to test exactly that: big bodies up front and a run-first mentality.
Utah's new head coach is not hiding from it. Morgan Scalley ran this defense for ten years before he got the corner office, and when he broke down the matchup this week, he went straight to the line of scrimmage.
Devon Dampier and the Utah offense
The Utah offense runs through a dual-threat quarterback, and he is a handful. Devon Dampier threw for 2,490 yards with 24 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions in 2025, and he ran for 835 yards and 10 more scores on his way to Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. That is 34 total touchdowns, and make no mistake, he is a runner first.
Behind him, Utah leans on a downhill back in Wayshawn Parker, who ran for 981 yards a year ago. The scheme is a run-leaning spread built on option concepts, which means the quarterback is essentially an extra runner. Arkansas has to stay assignment-sound, spy the quarterback, and refuse to guess. Freelance against this offense and it gashes you.
Can Arkansas exploit Utah's rebuilt offensive line?
Here is where Arkansas can win it. Utah lost those two first-round tackles and rebuilt all five spots, and as of game week the Utes still had not settled on a starting five because of injuries up front.
Be honest about it, though, because the honesty is the point. That new line did not give up a sack against Idaho, and Arkansas's own coach watched the film and refused to call it a weakness. Two different jobs graded differently. The pass protection held up, but the run blocking did not dominate, and it got stuffed in short yardage. Translation: it is the biggest unknown in this game, not a proven soft spot. Test it early, and test it inside.
The other side of the ball is the cleaner target. Utah's rebuilt defensive line managed just one sack against an overmatched Idaho team. And there is history worth knowing: late in 2025, this same Utah defensive scheme sprang leaks, as Kansas State ran for 472 yards and Kansas for 290. Fair caveat, most of those front-seven starters have since moved on, so it is a proven scheme problem now manned by a younger, unproven group. Either way, a light box against a team that wants to run is an invitation.
Utah's ballhawk defense
If the trenches are where Arkansas can win, the secondary is where it can lose the game in a hurry. Utah does not just cover, it hunts the football. The Utes own an NCAA record with a pick-six in 22 straight seasons, dating back to 2004, and they lead the country with 49 interceptions returned for touchdowns over that span.
Corner Scooby Davis had two interceptions in 2025 and returned both for touchdowns, 162 return yards that led the Big 12 and ranked third in the country. Safety Jackson Bennee added four picks, so the deep middle is a trap. Add a kicker in Dillon Curtis who already has a 54-yard field goal on his resume, and the margin for sloppy football shrinks fast. Arkansas turned the ball over three times in a shaky opener. Do that in Salt Lake and this defense turns mistakes into points the other way. Protect the ball.
Keys to the game
Boil down four quarters of scouting and it comes to this: control the line of scrimmage, keep Dampier in front of you, and do not hand this defense free points. Here is the short version to keep on the fridge.
What Arkansas Must Stop
- Dampier's legs. Spy him, stay gap-sound, keep him in the pocket.
- The ballhawks. No careless throws into the deep middle. Pick-six city.
- Curtis's leg. Respect the field-goal range, do not concede cheap points.
- Short yardage. Utah gets heavy near the goal line. Hold the line.
Where Arkansas Can Win
- Run it, inside. A 4-2-5 is light in the box, and the guard spot is unsettled.
- Attack the new O-line. The biggest unknown in the game. Test it early.
- Beat the pass rush. Utah managed 1 sack vs Idaho. Protect and pick.
- Protect the ball. Win the turnover margin and the upset math opens up.
Arkansas vs Utah prediction
Vegas has Utah favored by roughly a touchdown and a half, and the ranking says the Utes are the better team on paper. I am not going to argue with that. But this is the exact spot where a big, physical SEC front can steal one on the road, because the one thing Utah has not proven is that its rebuilt lines can hold up against real power.
Win the trenches and do not beat yourself, and this is a live upset. Turn it over and let Dampier get loose, and it is a two-score loss. I have Utah by four, with Arkansas covering the number, because the Razorbacks have a real path but Utah still has the better roster and the home night.
